Luis Suarez marked his new Liverpool contract with two goals on Saturday to send his team provisionally top of the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Cardiff.
The Uruguay striker’s first-half double took his tally to a Premier League record 19 goals this season, having missed the start of the season while banned for biting.
On the eve of the match, Suarez signed a new Liverpool deal through 2018.
Between Suarez’s strikes, Raheem Sterling also scored for Liverpool, and Jordon Mutch scored Cardiff’s only goal in the second half.
Liverpool moved a point ahead of Arsenal, which plays Chelsea on Monday.
The loss will likely further weaken coach Malky Mackay’s grip on the Cardiff job amid a power struggle with owner Vincent Tan, who was at Anfield.
