Live: Sensex drops 185 points, Wockhardt down 9% ahead of results

Mumbai: 1:00pm: The S&P BSE Sensex falls 185.11 points, or 0.67%, to 27,379.55.

12:55pm: Wockhardt Ltd crashes 9% to Rs.1,435 ahead of its March quarter earnings. According to Bloomberg estimates, the company may post a net profit of Rs.319.9 crore, while net sales will be Rs.1370.5 crore.

12:47pm: Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd fell (ONGC) is down 1.9% to Rs.325 ahead of its March quarter earnings. According to Bloomberg estimates, the company may post a net profit of Rs.5,619.6 crore, while net sales are expected at Rs.21,506.8 crore.

12:44pm: Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd slips 1.4% to Rs.960.75 ahead of its March quarter earnings. According to 22 analysts of Bloomberg, the company may post a net profit of Rs.1,628.10 crore, while net sales will beRs.4,867.90 crore.

12:40pm: Hindalco Industries Ltd falls 1.6% to Rs.132 ahead of its March quarter earnings. According to 20 analysts at Bloomberg, the company may post a net profit of Rs.284 crore, while net sales will be Rs.8,304.50 crore.

12:35pm: Chinese stocks plunge 6.5% on concerns over tight liquidity and stricter requirements for margin trading, dealers said. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slumps 321.44 points to 4,620.27 on record turnover of 1.2 trillion yuan ($196 billion).

The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, tumbles 5.52%, or 161.09 points, to 2,756.93 on turnover of 1.1 trillion yuan.

12:20pm: Vedanta Ltd shares rise 2.4% to Rs.196.60, while Cairn India Ltd inches up 0.2% to Rs.191. Vedanta on Wednesday said in a notice to BSE that it will buy 5.33% stake, or 100 million shares, of Cairn India from Twin Star Mauritius Holdings at Rs.220.40 apiece on 3 June. After this transaction, Twin Star Mauritius Holdings stake in Cairn India will go down to 34.08% from 39.41% earlier. As of March, Vedanta holds 59.9% stake in Cairn India.

11:52am: The S&P BSE Sensex slips in the read, falling 33.37 points, or 0.12%, to 27,531.29. The CNX Nifty is also down 12.35 points, or 0.15%, to 8,322.25.

11:35am: Shares of Adani Group companies are trading lower on the back of higher volumes on the last day of futures and options expiry as investors booked profits after a sharp rally ahead of the demerger. Shares of Adani Enterprises Ltd fall 9.1% to Rs.718.65, their sharpest fall since 8 July 2014, while those of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd are down 3.4% to Rs.327.70. Adani Power Ltd also slips 0.6% to Rs.39.65.

1:20am: United Spirits shares fall 2% after the company said on Wednesday that it had been served notices by the ministry of corporate affairs and the income-tax department regarding its accounting practices, some of which were again questioned by its independent auditor, BSR and Co. Llp. 

10:51am: The S&P BSE Sensex is now trading at 27,578.39, up 13.73 points, or 0.05%.

10:49am: Trident Ltd is trdaing up 6.6% to Rs.27.30 after the company reported a 38.07% increase in net profit to Rs.404.15 crore for the March quarter compared with Rs.29.27 crore a year ago.

10:44am: Hotel Leelaventure Ltd advances 7.8% to Rs.20 after the company reported net profit of Rs.43.96 crore in the March quarter compared with net loss of Rs.57.14 crore a year ago.

10:40am: Godrej Industries Ltd climbs 9.6% to Rs.397.90 after the company reported a 21.57% increase in net profit in the March quarter to Rs.138.96 crore compared with Rs.114.3 crore a year ago.

10:35am: Adlabs Entertainment Ltd drops 7.24% to Rs.152.50 after the company said net loss widened to Rs.3.12 crore in the March quarter as compared with Rs.3.01 crore a year ago.

10:30am: The S&P BSE Sensex is now trading higher by 25.81 points, or 0.09%, to 27,590.47.

10:28am: Jindal Steel and Power Ltd falls 4.1% to Rs.124 after the company reported net loss of Rs.519.3 crore in the March quarter compared with net profit of Rs.402.50 crore a year ago.

10:24am: Seamec Ltd surges 14.2% to Rs.126 after the company said in a notice to BSE that its board approved the buyback of 25% of its shares atRs.125 apiece.

10:19am: Man Infraconstruction Ltd declines 7.6% to Rs.46.85 after the company reported a 16% decline in net profit in the March quarter to Rs.3.08 crore compared with Rs.3.66 crore a year ago. Net sales fell 53% from a year ago to Rs.53.24 crore.

10:15am: JBF Industries Ltd lost 8.6% to Rs.217.20 after the company reported a 23.4% decline in net profit in the March quarter to Rs.28.26 crore compared with Rs.36.89 crore a year ago.

10:12am: Astrazeneca Pharma India Ltd climbs 17.8% to Rs.1,009.75 after the company reported a net profit of Rs38.13 crore in the March quarter as compared with a net loss of Rs2.57 crore a year ago.

10:08am: Redington India Ltd falls 7.2% to Rs.118.80 after the company reported a 59.7% decline in its March quarter stand-alone net profit toRs.48.01 crore compared with Rs.119.23 crore a year ago.

10:05am: Gammon Infrastructure Projects Ltd surges 15% to Rs.12.9 after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed foreign investment up to 49% in the company.

10:03am: Engineers India Ltd is trading up 3.6% to Rs.204 after the company said in a notice to BSE that it reported a net profit of Rs.108.86 crore in the March quarter, up 5.13% from a year ago.

9:58am: Bhushan Steel Ltd falls 7.7% to Rs.53.5 after the company said its net loss widened in the March quarter to Rs.360.77 crore compared withRs.19.57 crore a year ago.

9:55am: Sectoral indices—the BSE consumer durables is the top gainer, up 0.4%, followed by metal, oil and gas, realty, auto and IT, which are up 0.3% each. The BSE FMCG and healthcare indices are top losers, down 0.2% each, followed by power index which is down 0.1%.

9:50am: The gainers among Sensex stocks include Hero MotoCorp Ltd that has risen 1.7% to Rs.2,649, while Coal India is up 1.2% to Rs.387.60 ahead of its March quarter earnings. According to 26 analyst of Bloomberg, Coal India may post a net profit of Rs.4,650 crore, up 5% from a year ago.

9:47am: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading higher by 0.06%, or 16.68 points, at 27,581.34, while the 50-share CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is up 0.03%, or 2.65 points, to 8,337.25.

9:35am: The equity markets open flat today after closing near two-week low on Wednesday

9:30am: Earnings today—Bank of India, Amara Raja Batteries Ltd, Bajaj Hindusthan Ltd, BGR Energy Ltd, Coal India Ltd, Concor Ltd, Crompton Greaves Ltd, Cummins India Ltd, Educomp Ltd, Hindalco Ltd and Tata Global Ltd.

9:25am: The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond is trading at 7.666% compared with its Wednesday’s close of 7.678%.

9:20am: The Indian rupee on Thursday opens at 63.99 per dollar and strengthens to 63.94 compared with its its previous close of 64.03. 

9:15am: The euro is little changed at $1.0908 from $1.0899 in the previous trading session. The dollar continues to be strong, rising to 124.01 yen from 123.75 yen.

9:08am: Benchmark US crude adds 31 cents to $57.82 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract falls 52 cents to settle at $57.51 a barrel in Nymex floor trading on Wednesday. Brent crude rises 47 cents to $62.53 a barrel in London.

9:04am: Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 rises 0.7% to 20,609.28; the index is up nearly 10% in the past three months as exporter stocks benefit from a cheap yen. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edges down 0.4% to 5,702.10 while South Korea’s Kospi gains 0.7% to 2,121.66. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng loses 1.1% to 27,769.95 and the Shanghai Composite drops 0.9% to 4,898.90. Southeast Asian markets fall, while Taiwan and New Zealand rise.

9:00am: Asian stocks are uneven as hopes in Europe for a Greek bailout were welcomed by some regional markets and a cheap yen kept the upswing in Tokyo shares going.

8:58am: Greece might miss a debt payment on 5 June if it fails to receive bailout funds from creditors, who are demanding that the country make reforms to its economy. It is still unclear whether an agreement can be reached in time, but European shares got a lift from players counting on a deal being reached.

8:55am: The Dow Jones industrial average rose 121.45 points, or 0.7%, to 18,162.99. It had fallen 190 points on Tuesday. The Standard and Poor’s 500 rose 19.28 points, or 0.9%, to 2,123.48 and the Nasdaq composite rose 73.84 points, or 1.5%, to 5,106.59.
