Red Bull’s Mark Webber beat teammate Sebastian Vettel to pole position in qualifying Saturday for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix.

It was the 12th career pole position for the Australian in his last season in Formula One.

Webber clocked a fastest time of 1 minute 30.915 seconds at the Suzuka circuit to beat Vettel by 0.174 seconds.

Vettel, however, was driving without the KERS energy recovery system following a defect.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was third to start on the grid alongside Romain Grosjean in a Lotus, while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was eighth.
