The Bengal contingent will look to use the home advantage to break Tamil Nadu’s dominance when the National sub-junior (under-15) chess returns to the city after a gap of 23 years. The 39th edition of the tournament, which gets underway here at the Bidhan Sishu Uddyan on Tuesday, will be pitting a clutch of talented juniors who are looking to make it to the league of Grandmasters.

The boys section has two ‘titled’ players on the top of the seeding. IM Diptayan Ghosh of Bengal, who was the runner-up last year, is the top seed and definitely one of the favourites to claim the title.

The girls’ section is expected to see Tamil Nadu’s dominance with the talented N. Mahalaxmi and G.K. Manisha getting the top two places in the seeding. — Principal Correspondent
