David cameron and Samantha have been photographed arriving at Mark's Club, a private members' dining club in Mayfair, for a celebratory dinner following the Conservative’s surprise election win.
Dressed in an open neck checked shirt and blue suit, the Tory leader looked confident and relaxed as he strode along hand in hand with his wife, who wore a knee-length bright red cocktail dress accessorised with hoop earrings and a belt.
Mark's Club describes itself as a "private members' dining club based in a serene Mayfair townhouse" with a first floor terrace which "affords Members a quiet spot to enjoy a postprandial cigar". The Chancellor was seen arriving at the central London dining club minutes later, the Mail reported, giving rise to speculation that he gatecrashed their romantic dinner.
The Tory leader had confounded all expectations including his own, by sweeping back into power with an overall Commons majority of 12, having won 331 seats to Labour’s 232.
Mr Cameron used his first speech as a majority leader to promise he would govern Britain as “one nation, one UK…in the interest of all its people” after the unstoppable march of the SNP left them with 56 of the 59 Westminster seats in Scotland.
The unprecedented result put the future of the Union in serious doubt, and Mr Cameron acted swiftly to extend the hand of friendship to Scots Nationalists by promising to “respect” the nearly 1.5 million people north of the border who voted for Nicola Sturgeon’s party, and pledging to make Scotland the “strongest devolved government anywhere in the world”.
He also spoke by phone to Ms Sturgeon – who was with him later at the Cenotaph - to begin what is likely to be a constant dialogue over Scotland’s future.
By the time he spoke outside Downing Street, his three main opponents had been decapitated following a night of blood-letting: Mr Miliband and Mr Clegg had already resigned, together with Ukip’s Nigel Farage, who failed to win election to Parliament.
