Junaid made such an impression on the radical Islamic setup in India and aroused so little suspicion that he was offered leadership roles in the now proscribed Students Islamic Movement of India and the Al Ummah.

Junaid was arrested in 1998 after security agencies got wind of his activities, including smuggling of arms and explosives to different parts of the country at the instance of then LeT commander for India operations, Azam Cheema.

The man who had trained Junaid and set up his infiltration into India, according to the case registered by the Hyderabad police in 1998, was Abdul Karim Tunda. Junaid is now in prison and is likely to be brought face to face after two decades with Tunda.

Besides this case, Andhra Pradesh authorities will have to seek custody of Tunda in two more cases.

Tunda's another old accomplice is Dr Jalees Ansari, with whom he had allegedly conspired to carry out blasts in a train on December 6, 1993 ' the first anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition. Jalees was arrested in 1996 and is currently in a Hyderabad prison.

The third case is connected to training Hyderabad-resident Azam Ghauri in the LeT camps of Pakistan in the early 1990s. Ghauri, who formed Indian Muslim Mohammadi Mujahideen, was killed in an encounter in 2000.
