With women’s safety becoming a much-debated issue in India, everyone wants to be involved and create awareness about the subject. In a novel attempt to make a difference, Kalki Koechlin has shot a satirical video, titled It’s Your Fault, that takes on the mindset that women are responsible for the rise in sexual assault cases against them.
A group of stand-up comedians known as All India Bak*** — Tanmay Bhat, Gursimran Khamba, Rohan Joshi and Ashish Shakya —have made this video that also stars VJ Juhi Pandey. The clip, which has gone viral on social media, suggests that rape survivors should have dressed appropriately or called their rapist bhaiyya (brother) to avoid the crime.
Initially, Kalki was reluctant to do it as she was swamped with work but 'when Bhat sent the script, I changed my mind.' She adds, 'It was so funny, clever and relevant to what’s happening that I immediately agreed.'
The actor knew this was the right approach to a sensitive topic and wanted it to resonate with the audience without trivialising the issue. 'We were worried about people not understanding the sarcasm. It’s a sensitive topic and we were anxious that it might backfire,' says Kalki, adding that the intention was not to offend anyone. 'Humour is a fantastic way to deal with a serious subject. You are making people uncomfortable, but at the same time you are not preaching or forcing views down their throat.'
The response to the video has been so fabulous that people want the creators to dub it in other languages so that it reaches a wider audience. 'Hopefully, we will have a Hindi version out soon and others will follow,' says the actor.
The actor admits that everything adds to the debate and it is not one thing that will change in society. Kalki says, 'As long as we keep the conversation going and we don’t forget about the problems that we have, it will help. And the debate causes some change.'
